Avid & PBIS Programs
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college and career readiness program designed to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for success in higher education and beyond. While AVID is widely known for its impact in middle and high schools, it is also effectively implemented in elementary schools to build foundational academic habits early on.
At Partin Settlement, AVID focuses on:
- Organizational Skills: Students learn to use tools like binders, planners, and graphic organizers to manage their work and time effectively.
- Critical Thinking: Teachers incorporate strategies that promote inquiry, collaboration, and problem-solving.
- Student Agency: Young learners are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through goal-setting and reflection.
- Structured Note-Taking: Even at a young age, students begin learning how to take and use notes to support comprehension and retention.
- College Awareness: AVID introduces the concept of college and career readiness in age-appropriate ways, helping students envision their future.
AVID Elementary is not a standalone class but a schoolwide approach integrated into daily instruction. Teachers receive professional development to embed AVID strategies into all subject areas, creating a consistent and supportive learning environment.
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is a proactive, schoolwide framework used in elementary schools to promote positive behavior, improve school climate, and enhance academic outcomes.
PBIS focuses on:
- Teaching Expectations: At Partin Settlement, we clearly define and teach behavioral expectations (Pioneer 3: Be respectful, Be responsible, Be a positive problem-solver) across all settings like classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds.
- Positive Reinforcement: Our Pioneers are recognized and rewarded for meeting expectations through praise, Pioneer Bucks, and school-wide incentives.
- Consistent Consequences: Clear, consistent responses, using the district’s Student Code of Conduct, to both positive and inappropriate behaviors help students understand the impact of their actions.
- Data-Driven Decisions: As a school, we use behavior data to identify trends, address issues early, and adjust interventions as needed.
- Inclusive Environment: PBIS supports all students, including those with behavioral challenges, by providing tiered levels of support.
